SAH uses square "stands".
Any square will do. I play with 40x40mm elements in 15mm and with 80x80mm trays with larger figures.
Number of figures on stands is irrelevant.
2 to 10 stands compose a unit. The magic number is 4 or 5 -- you generally want units composed of at least 4 stands.
Huge monsters and characters are single based. No casualty removal needed (you remove whole stands).
Generally, no counters are needed (a unit may be normal or "vulnerable", when the unit is vulnerable the stands are slightly staggered to represent confusion).
Fighting is by unit, not by stand, so any unit of less than 4 stands fights at a disadvantage, and any unit larger than 4 may fight at an advantage depending on the opponent's formation and position.
The game plays fast -- a first game played with 15 stands per player was over in 45 minutes today.

Oversized creatures like dragons that do not fit on a square may be based on a rectangle (same frontage as a square, deep as two squares).
Models already based for other systems can be used by putting them on square trays or, as long as they have the same frontage, used as they are with little modification to the rules.

Hi, can just post some pictures in order to have an idea of how SAH would look?

Will SAH work with Warmaster based figures, as they tend to only come with 3 bases per blister?

We didn't take pictures today as we were playing on an impromptu board. I'm in the process of building a simple table for this. I'll take pictures next time.
As per Warmaster, how many figs are in a blister? If you are buying them for SAH, just put any amount of figures that look good on a 40x40mm square. If you have them already based for Warmaster, you can put two warmaster units on a square. I do not have warmaster based units so I do not know what problems they could cause but I think you could safely play them as they are.

I have a lot of 10mm Warmaster. I've based mine on 40x40mm squares. There are three ways of doing this as far as I can tell.
1) Cutting individuals out of the strips and basing them as per a 40x40mm diorama (which I have done)
2) Mounting two strips (aka what you would for one warmaster stand) on the 40x40mm stand, seperated enough to make it look asthetically pleasing.
3) Mounting four strips (aka what you would for two warmaster stands) on the 40x40mm stand. Or you may just temporarily mount two warmaster stands as one on a 40x40mm base.
Andrea, just a question on the 'singly based' characters/monsters. Are we talking the characters are mounted on a 40x40mm base themselves? Or a smaller base as per Warmaster?
Cheers, Ben.

Huge monsters are based on a square base like normal stands; characters are based on coins, washers etc -- just use the figures from your skirmish games to represent them. They move very fast through the battlefield ignoring terrain and moving through friends.

SAH may be the game I am most anticipating right now. I was painting and basing an Undead army for HotT, but have stopped and am now waiting for SAH's release before I pick it back up again.
Andrea, you said the number of figs per stand is irrelevant, but what do you use?

I use 2 or 3 infantry for skirmisher types, 4 or 5 for close order infantry types, 2 for cavalry and other four legged creatures like centaurs. The idea is : whatever fits and looks good on the stand. I'll have pics at some point...

Very nice. So when can those of us not attending these gatherings expect some more details on how SAH works? I know you don't play Warhammer, but do you think it is comparable to that?
I don't have any experience with large wargames myself, but I'm hoping that this may be my first.

I have played Warhammer (3rd edition) for years.
I would say it works more like a smaller Warmaster or a large scale HOTT with the general mechanics being the same as SBH (quality and C plus special rules). It plays fast because combat resolution is by unit (you roll a die per unit, and not a die per stand) and there are some automatic actions that do not require activation rolls. Likewise, morale is dramatic. Heroes and othjer special characters may affect combat (mages are much more powerful than the skirmish game being able to pin or bolster or destroy whole units, or even to alter the battlefield to some extent).
The hard part is to write clear rules and to cram up all the rules, exceptions, diagrams etc in a short book.
