Time of Day: Dawn
Weather: Pleasant
Scenario: Loot and Pillage
The members of Harlaz's Expeditionary Force were in a sour mood. Ever since arriving on the surface world, they had meet defeat after defeat. After nursing their wounds from their latest run-in with the Elven River Runners, they spotted a pair of dwarves returning from a patrol. Now, the only other dwarves in the area were their goodie-two shoes surface cousins. A plan was quickly hatched to follow the patrol back to their headquarters and then see what could be stolen. After all, nothing helps moral than a chest full of gold and jewels taken from the *T'resk!
*T'resk is a subterranean dwarven derogatory term for the Dwarves that live on the surface world.
(In the campaign, I was paired up against Brandon. During the initiative phase, I won and had the option of choosing a raid. Seeing that Brandon was flush with Gold, I chose the "Loot and Pillage" raid. We rolled "Big Monster Hill" on Brandon's chart, which is a hill land.)
As the raiders approached, the T'resk's bears caught wind of the them and the alarm was sounded. It wouldn't be a quick smash and grab after all!
As taking on a force that is twice as big is never a good idea, the raiders split into two groups hoping that the defenders would over commit to one side. After all, the goal is to steal treasure!
Harlaz lead the left flank of the attack. All was going well until several of her Dwarves were blinded by the rising sun, causing the to trip over their own two feet! (Double 1's were common in the first few turns of moving up)
Meanwhile the T'resk were able to move up to protect the ruins.
Part of the force was sent to protect the treasure on the right flank.
Harlaz pulled her forces up short. They were in a good defensible position. They just had to wait until an opportunity to open up before charging.
On the right flank, the dwarves were dancing around the rocky hill trying to confuse the T'resk into making a mistake.
(Brandon has a tendency to always roll 3 dice for activation. With so many models, half of which were away from their leader, he was bound to roll 2 failures and leave himself in a bad position. I kept maneuvering so that I would be in a position to capitalize on a premature end of his turn)
With the T'resk leader busy of the right flank, Harlaz charged on the left flank. If they could get a quick kill or two, the T'resk would be disorganized enough for her forces to grab some treasure and run for it!
The attack on the left flank was going slowly, too slowly. The T'resk leader rushed back to guide her troops; however, her orders were confusing and contradictory. (Brandon left his leader in the open, just ripe for attack)
Sensing an opportunity to cause a quick rout, Harlaz attacked the enemy leader herself with the aid of a minion. However, the cursed sun reflected of the T'resk's armor, blinding her. (I based Brandon's leader with a model and then attacked with my leader. I failed the roll, causing my leader to be knocked down. Sensing that the end was near, I didn't bother taking photos of the exchange.)
The T'resk sensed an opportunity! They quickly swarmed around Harlaz, hoping to take advantage of her weakness! However, in their confusion, they forgot to actually attack!
(At this point, I should have lost the game. All Brandon had to do was beat my leader's combat roll once and she would have been dispatched. Once Brandon killed my leader, I would have conceded the field. However, Brandon got greedy. He continued to activate model after model to move them to base my leader. He was going for a mathematically certain kill. As he rolled to activate the last unit to base my leader, he rolled double 1's, causing his turn to end before getting off the attack. In the process of basing my leader, he left his leader's flanks exposed. I was able to stand up my leader and move my models into strike.)
(The picture below is just before the attack that killed his leader. My leader has a silver hammer and his leader has a gold hammer. The Dwarf at the very bottom was the last unit Brandon activated. The sad part is that it only took one move to get that unit to base my leader, so Brandon should have rolled only 1 die to activate him.)
With a mighty swing, one of Harlaz's Dragon Slayer killed the T'resk's leader. The rout was glorious and several more T'resk were dispatched as they tried to run away.
(Several of Brandon's figures couldn't move far enough away to avoid the autokill for being within short range of an enemy unit after a failed moral check.)
The rest of Harlaz's forces quickly formed a skirmish line to protect her from the enemy forces.
With the death of their leader, the T'resk were disorganized. They launched attacks at Harlaz's forces in piecemeal and were quickly defeated. Even one of the might Dire Bears fell to the Harlaz's weapons. In the confusion, one of Harlaz's dwarves grab a chest of gold and ran from the hills!
Without a leader and no longer able to mount an effective defense, the T'resk withdrew from the field
(Brandon conceded the game and we agreed that I would claim all four treasure tokens. This netted me 120 Gold!)
(This was a major victory for me as I didn't lose a single figure while eliminating over half of Brandon's forces. The turning point is when Brandon pushed his luck a little too far and failed to kill my leader.)
