When will (insert your favorite game here) be released?”
That’s the question we hear most often. Usually, unless we are really giving the finishing touches to a game, such as painting a cover or doing the layout, our answer is “I don’t really know”. Bear in mind that Ganesha is a one man operation… with more than a little help from his friends….
Sometimes, a game seems almost ready, and then in playtest we realize that something is wrong. For example Fear and Faith included a very detailed “fear points” system which we felt introduced too much book-keeping. We were close to publication but decided that those rules didn’t work, so we redesigned them from ground up.
So please -- don't ask "when". Go to our work-in-progress page or on the News Page on www.ganeshagames.net and, if a game is about to be released, you'll find the relevant info there. Thanks!
How Can I help?
You can volunteer to be a playtester, and you’ll receive a free copy of the game when it is released. But please do so when we announce we are looking for playtesters on a specific book. We receive a LOT of mail everyday and it’s not possible for us to coordinate more than 4-5 playtesters at the same time. There’s simply not time to reply to all. Before applying for playtesting, please make sure your gaming pals want to play that game. Many times, we had people sign up as playtesters and then tell us that they never manage to play because their friends won’t try the game.
We do solo playtesting ourselves. We don’t need people to read over the rules and tell us what they think (playtest version rules are unfinished and rough anyway). We need ACTUAL playtesting in a MULTIPLAYER environment, where the rules fall under the scrutiny of many different minds and play styles. We also like to have our games tested in a variety of scales and basing systems.
Editors and Proofreaders
We are always looking for people who can spell check and edit our documents for clarity, grammar and word use. We have no budget for editors but we can “pay” your efforts with products. To be an editor or proofreader, you must be a native English speaker, preferrably with a degree of sorts. Turnaround speed is very important. Editing is the last process a book goes through and we can’t afford keeping a book on hold for a long time.
Layout Men and Illustrators
If you can use Indesign CS2 or Scribus, we always appreciate help in pagesetting and layout. We prefer a minimalistic approach for our black and white books, and our illustrations generally have a bit of a retro feel. As above, we have no money to pay these services, but working on a game can be a nice way to build up your CV as a designer. Or just a way to get the game you want in your hands faster!
