We played a great game of MDRG this weekend but came up with one question. Why would you use a pistol in H/h combat ( as opposed to a sword/club ) if it gives a -2 to your score?. I'm certain I'm missing something here

Nope... fighting in melee combat with a pistol is a bad idea... however some fighter's in MDRG don't get a choice (perhaps they get surprised, or perhaps they are armed with dual pistols).
It's the reason why any self-respecting post-apoc scavanger gets themselves a big bit of wood with nails in it!

Cheers for the reply. Makes perfect sense.

Not for me, why a -2 only for pistols and not for rifle or other ranged weapon?

Ranged Weapons [typically] cannot be used in HTH combat at all (see MDRG pg.19). If the description of a Ranged Weapon does not specificially state that it can be used in HTH combat, then the general rule that ranged weapons cannot be used in HTH applies. Certain weapons (Pistol, Electric Gun etc.) state they can be fired in HTH. However, if you are referring to firing ranged weapons in HTH in general, you could institute a house rule that 1-handed ranged weapons (e.g. Pistols) can be fired in HTH at -2 penalty and 2-handed ranged weapons (e.g. Assault Rifles) can be fired at a -3 penalty. I find it's just easier to just carry a big stick... preferrably with rusty nails in it!
