I've been playing a few games with my brother and he loves the game. He did mention like many new players the lack of weapons and armor. This did get me thinking again. I know Andreas is reluctant to think of this amount of granularity in the rules for fear of complicating something that works very well. But here are my few suggestions that work quite well for certain circumstances they would essentially be special rules.
2-Handed weapon. User is at -1C in Hand to Hand only. However if the use wins a hand to hand and only if he wins he is instead at +2C for working out resolution.
Polearm. If the use wins and only if he wins a hand to hand combat he is at +1C for working out resolution.
Lightly armored. Good for those warriors that are skillful but wear no armor. If the warrior loses a combat they are at -1C for working out the degree of loss.

you could use something similar tothe rule used in SDS or Flying Lead. When a figure armed with better weapon (you can create a list or have longer reach is better) wins the loser falls on any dice; if he loses has -1.

Song of Spear and Shield will have all the weapons you want, using the better weapon and the better armor rules. Some weapons have special abilities that take place only when rolling a 6, others ignore shields, others have reach, etc. Those who want to port this added complexity into SBH will be able to do so. Profiles will go up by a few points...

SSS sounds like what we need.
I'm inclined to scrap the lists I have for LotR figures (built from SBH) and starting over when SSS comes out. LotR is low fanatsy with a good number of weapons for the different troops (Pikes, Spears, Axes, etc.). Some magic can be brought over from SBH for Wizards, Nazgul, and the like.

the only problems you might porting the SSS weapons will be 1) some effects will look a tad extreme on fantasy creatures 2) you'll have to judge how monsters natural attacks can be classified in the "better weapon" list

LotR is a low magic world (no magic missles flying around), so converting to SSS will work great.
Keeping to a strict 2nd War of the Ring game, Trolls will be the only issue for monsters. No Balrogs or Dragons like in the silly GW game (got to keep those power gamers happy).
All of the figures in the LotR line have specific weapons and armor, so the SSS rules are really needed.

I played my first games of SBH tongiht and have to say that the LACK of detailed lists of weapons and armor and fiddly bits was wonderful. Want a 2-handed weapon to do more damage, make the character savage, etc.
My usual war game recently has been Field of Glory, which is wicked complex, so perhaps I'll be a bit biased until the happy of an awesome new game wears off. ;D
