I'm thinking about buying SBH (and maybe some supplements?) as a birthday present for my spouse (her birthday is December 21st). Not only that, but I actually intend to build her a "starting set" with two warbands, three d6's and some terrain in addition to the rules so that we could play it right away.
She's already a gamer, loving boardgames such as Talisman and tabletop RPGs such as D&D 3.0E, "old school" D&D clones, and Shadowrun. But I want to introduce her to skirmish wargaming as well.
My preferred scale if 15mm, a legacy of my Classic Traveller roots. I intend to get her two 15mm warbands, as well as build her some terrain.
Regarding the table, we have a 3ft by 2ft table, which we will cover with a green table-cloth (for a grassy/swamp terrain).
I already have 24 Old Glory Lizardmen with an assortment of melee weapons but no ranged weapons and apparently no spellcasters. Could I use, say, 10-15 of them as one warband, and oppose some orcs/goblins to them, or should I buy a more diverse warband?
Also, should I buy just the main SBH core-book, or is it advisable to get the supplements as well right from the start?
And how much terrain should I prepare for a 3ft by 2ft playing surface?
Input would be appreciated.

I know nothing about your spouse, so there's nothing to base this on, but everything I know about women makes me want to scream: "Do not buy her a warband for her birthday. Take her out, or stay in and make her dinner, but do not buy her a warband for her birthday!"
Like I said, that's just my read on women, no matter how much they enjoy to game. Maybe give her a warband for 'no reason' and still do something else for her day.

If she's a fan of RPG's why not base a warband around her characters in the game?. 15mm.co.uk do individual adventurers.

Don't worry, I'll be preparing her a gourmet dinner AND baking a home-made cake (as I ALWAYS do for her birthdays and she does for mine - and we know each other for six and a half years); the warbands are just the additional gift.

I just have to find a male Dwarf Wizard (or alchemist) 15mm figure to represent her beloved D&D character and a female Human Cleric, a female Dwarf Fighter and maybe another two or three male Dwarf Fighters to represent the retinue. Again, MANY thanks! She loves this character of hers (a D&D 3.0E male Dwarf Wizard called Barin), and she'll LOVE this present. ;D Oh, she even painted Barin once in oil on canvas (yep, painting and drawing are one of her hobbies): By golan2072 at 2010-12-12 Her character's companion Olga: By golan2072 at 2009-04-16 Unrelated but a sorceress she drew up: By golan2072 at 2009-04-16 If I could find minis to represent these, it'll be GREAT!
