I'm new to SBH but not to wargaming; should I just get the core SBH booklet first and play it awhile and get the supplements later, or get all the main supplements together (as $27 is a tempting price for the whole 4-booklet bundle)?

I've got the set and think their great. Be aware that there is an updated version of SOBH being worked on. I've no idea if this will alter or invalidate any of the supplements but GG give free updates so there shouldn't be too much of a problem.
It might be worth posting the question on the Yahoo group as you'll get a wider and better informed range of opnions than just mine.

Ì ordered stuff one by one... and over two days I ended up going for most of the SOBH... so I can only advice you to get the bundle right away.. It is well worth it in my opinion...
