Hey all, I just purchased SBH at x-mas time this year after reading about how easy it was for kids to get the hang of. I had purchased my daughter and I armies from Splintered Light to start her wargaming a bit. She decided she liked the lion men so it was only natural for me to get the hyena men. Then we decided that our games would be based on Disney's "The Lion King." So she's got Simba and the lions (with Poomba and some cheetahs as support) and I've got Scar and the evil hyenas. Pictures from our first game here: www.flickr.com/photos/hexxenhammer/sets/72157623050574679/I'll make some actual 15mm terrain someday, but for now we're just using construction paper and cut out shapes for rocks, woods, and a watering hole. She won this first game , but I curb-stomped her in our second the next day. ;D We've learned that getting your leader killed is an easy way to lose quickly!

Well done! How old is she? I'm thinking of giving my 6yr old son a chance to finally get his hands on Daddy's little men for an Arthur and Merlin game, but having not purchased the rules yet, I wondered if they are easy enough to play w/o getting too frustrating.
Looks lke they worked for your daughter!

She's six as well, so he should be able to manage just fine. Just give him his options on his turn and let him roll the dice.
Several things make this game good for kids.
1. Measuring sticks instead of tape measures. 2. Activation based on counting how many dice above a certain # were rolled. 3. 1 die combat. We roll the combat dice then starting from what was rolled we count on our fingers to add the combat score.
After a few turns I was hearing, "Papa! I can decide for myself!" and "I can do what I want!" so she was understanding just fine.

That is a prime example of how much fun the system is for kids and wargaming newcomers.thanks for sharing your game with us.(Will have to have camera ready when we play). My 7 and 8 year olds enjoy the game and if you print out the most excellent short ,medium and long triangle templates fom the yahoo group it makes the game so much easier too.

I have to say, the Lion King is a truely inspired idea! Hmmm... Kingdom Hearts... now there's an thought, perhaps I'll knock up a PDF for the Yahoo Group.

great work hexxenhammer, I think the scenery looks great as is, i didn't realise that drawing the scenery onto construction paper could work so well, good idea with the lion king background, looks like you both had a lot of fun, great to see family enjoying gaming, who knows you may have a gamer for life after that regards jim

Thanks, the construction paper is another way to get the kids involved. They can color and cut it out themselves. And you won't care if a juice box gets spilled on it.
