I do not mean to offend those who love Origins, but why Origins and not GenCon?

Gencon currently sucks for miniature gaming unless your Privateer Press or Catalyst Games.
Last year the majority of the miniature games were stuck up on the second floor away from the majority of the foot traffic.
I ran a number of SDS and SoBH games and I had 0 drop-ins. Every single person that played had pre-registered. Each day, I had at least 1 session where I didn't have any players. Nobody had signed up and there wasn't any foot traffic for me to recruit players from.
I've run games at Gencon for over a decade and have never had such a bad location (in terms of foot traffic) as I did last year and that includes the "year of the basement" at Gencon '97.
It was so bad that I am not even attending Gencon this year (first time in 18 years). In 2011, when the construction is complete, it should be a better venue for miniature games as there will be more space available and everything should be in the same room.

I can only afford one trip to the States per year; over the Internet, the Origins people have been much more supportive and generous while the GenCon people were just, uhm, telling me to line up with the others (not that I wanted any special treatment, I just wonder how many people they have paying for a $700 flight and flying over from Europe to run games-- they have no allowance for GMs, or at least failed to tell me; I asked if I could sell my books to make up for my expenses and they told me if I wanted to sell my books I had to pay for booth space. Which would kinda defeat the purpose of recouping expenses :-)).
Anyway, we'll see. I have friends in Indy that could let me sleep in their apartment, I might find a cheap last-minute flight and make it to GenCon too.

Of course if Rich manages to come, I imagine there will be a permanent FL table :-) and I will use my FL time to demo some other game. It's mostly a matter of how many miniatures we can carry. I prefer to have them in my hand luggage as they can be opened and checked at the airport and not mistaken for bullets or worse.

Mikez - that is unfortunate that your miniature gaming experience has been so negative. I have always enjoyed having a separate hall from all the card games and what not. I agree with you that the venue is much accomdodating to bigger game companies. Of course, I have never heard of Catalyst. I have played plenty of Warmachine, 40k, DDM, SWM, etc. I hope some fans show up as I would like to play with some outside of my normal group to get a feel for how others play these great games.
Andrea - I am not surprised at GenCon's lack of support. It really has turned into a money making operation first and game convention second. Small game publishers have a difficult time and I have heard many times that it is difficult to cover their expenses. Now I have a better idea why after your explanation. I hope to make it to Origins one of these days, but one game convention a year is about all I can afford money and time wise. GenCon just has so much more to offer me compared to Origins currently.

BTW, Catalyst are the current producers of BattleTech. Mikez - that is unfortunate that your miniature gaming experience has been so negative. Just the last few years have been negative. I've been running games at Gencon since '96 and have seen many different configurations. The absolute best configuration is when everything is in the same room. Either all miniature games or the miniatures and board games together. This generates lots of foot traffic and raises the visibility of the different games. Mike Z

Andrea and Sergio, It will be great to have you back in Columbus, again! Having just talked to my buddy Dave Zecchini, I can let you know he is running his The Vault scenario again at Origins, this year. It uses MDRG rules. He will run it Thursday and Friday evening at 7 pm, and again on Saturday at noon. It is a gorgeous board, and people always have a blast playing it. Lots of pics of folks playing it at: www.vitruvianzeke.com/ProjectHulk/ProjectHulk.htmlOrigins has a HUGE selection of miniatures games, so anyone interested and trying out lots of different stuff, plan on attending! Would love to be there to get in a game of Song of Armies and Hordes - great opportunity to see how it plays... ... I love living in Australia, but sometimes... Cheers, Ben.

I am also very pumped to see Song of Armies and Hordes. If I did attend Origins this year, it would be just to play that game. With only a couple of games being offered I would be a little scared of making the committment.
